Indie-pop duo Isabella&Sebastian are a glorious anomaly: two young artists with old-soul sensibilities and wildly vast imagination, backed ab a musical sophistication well beyond their years. Since teaming up in 2022, Memphis natives Isabella DeFir and Sebastian Stephens have charmed audiences all across the globe with their fantastically unpredictable sound and heart-on-the-sleeve songwriting.

Written entirely by Isabella&Sebastian, Is Anybody Listening?, delivers 11 songs born from a deeply experimental process that brings DeFir's tender yet soulful voice to a dizzying collision of genres (dream-pop, indie-rock, ‘70s R&B, ’90s breakcore, classic glam-rock, and much more). A highly gifted multi-instrumentalist/composer who started playing drums on his third birthday, Stephens co-produced the LP alongside mixing engineer Scott Hardin, approaching each track with equal parts playful spontaneity and exquisite attention to detail.  Is Anybody Listening?  tears through a whirlwind of feelings: the thrill of infatuation, the ache of longing to be perceived, the pain and beauty of being highly sensitive.

Mastered by three-time Grammy winner Brad Blackwood, Is Anybody Listening? spotlights the dazzling musicality of both DeFir and Stephens have honed since early childhood. After getting his start on drums, Stephens quickly added piano, bass and guitar to his repertoire (earning his first paycheck as a musician while still in kindergarten), and later performed in Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit Broadway musical, School of Rock, The Musical and in Wes Anderson's critically lauded 2023 film, Asteroid City. Stephens also became the youngest student in the history of Berklee College of music online to earn multiple certifications where he continues advanced studies. A lifelong singer who began hosting concerts in her bedroom as a little girl, DeFir started writing songs at age 11 and launched a solo career at 15, then linked up with Stephens when the two joined Soundbox, a local rock band.

“From the beginning there was a really strong musical chemistry, almost like a sibling relationship”, says DeFir. “There's always been a natural playfulness with Seba and me in rehearsal, onstage, or just goofing around. It's the sort of natural intuition that both feeds and balances our approach to songwriting. We just get each other.”  When Stephens showed DeFir an instrumental demo he'd created and asked her to add lyrics, the two soon arrived at the pure pop majesty of “Helium” and made their auspicious debut as Isabella&Sebastian in early 2024.

Looking back on their journey over the past couple of years, Isabella&Sebastian hope their story motivates others to pursue their own creative ambitions. “When Seba and I work together, there's so much inspiration coursing through us and so many lightbulb moments constantly going off in our brains”, DeFir says. “I'd love for people to feel that and feel encouraged to chase their own dreams, no matter what they are. At the end of the day, we just want to invite everyone into this warm and welcoming community of people who love music, and hopefully leave them feeling more inspired and vibrant and alive.”
